What are Growth Plates?

A growth plate is a region of bone in a growing dog that results in lengthening of a bone. Essentially, this is how dogs grow. These plates tend to close at a very predictable age. Most of your dog’s height growth is completed before the growth plates close. For small/toy breed dogs, they tend to close between 6-8 months of age. For large/giant breed dogs, they tend to close anywhere between 14-18 months of age.

It is not needed, but the only way to know for sure if your pet's growth plates are closed, is to take a radiograph.

If you have questions about your pet's joints or concerned about any growing issues, always make sure to consult with your veterinarian.
